History Made! Barack Obama Is The Official Nominee; Hillary & Bill Clinton and Joe Biden Play Their Cards Well

One fish, two fish, red fish, blue fish...
John McCain will give us more of the same shit.
That's not change, that's more of the same!
No way no how no John McCain!

We can thank Joe Biden tonight for the third line and Hillary for the fourth one yesterday. I threw them together and thank Dr. Seuss for the first one.

It's official, history has been made. Barack Obama, the even-tempered, brilliant American we can all claim has been officially nominated. It makes my heart smile that he shares my ethnic heritage, but if you're white, he shares yours too.

I realize this isn't my deepest or most analytical post. I had just had to get the words down while the excitement is in my heart, and also before my head is polluted with comments from the talking heads.

Oh, what a difference a day makes. The Clinton strategists must have read about all the flack from last's speech from disgruntled Democrats and black folks alike who on one hand, loved most of her speech, but on the other, picked up the same Party Unity My Ass undercurrent that I and goo-gobs of other bloggers and news folk touched upon.

Did you see Michelle Obama? She was in way better shape today. She looked fantastic. Girlfriend was adorned in a stunning designer dress and jewelry, hair gorgeous, and relaxed. She looked like a First Lady. I have yet to find a photo of tonight's outfit, but she was as stylish as she was on Monday when the spotlight was on her.

And it's no wonder she had chilled: Hillary asked the delegates to suspend their counting of votes and to give them up - to Barack.

It's about damn time. Thank you, Hillary, and thanks for doing it with style. You looked fantastic too.

"With eyes firmly fixed on the future," she said, "in the spirit of unity, with the goal of victory, with faith in our party and our country, let's declare together in one voice right here, right now, that Barack Obama is our candidate and he will be our president!"

The audience cheered and chanted, Yes We Can!

It was her husband Bill who really stole the show. He didn't mince words about the damage done by one stinker of a Texas fart who tarnished our nation in the last seven years, and hit the GOP squarely in their fake family values.

He said, "What did they [American workers] get in return? Declining wages, less than 1/4 as many new jobs as in the previous eight years, smaller health care and pension benefits, rising poverty and the biggest increase in income inequality since the 1920s. American families by the millions are struggling with soaring health care costs..."

Bill dismissed the nonsense that Barack is too young to run the country and pointed out the GOP said the same thing about him. He went for the jugular too:

"What about the military families pushed to the breaking point by unprecedented multiple deployments? What about the assault on science and the defense of torture? What about the war on unions and the unlimited favors for the well connected? What about Katrina and cronyism?"

Torture? Hurricane Katrina? Oh yeah, Bill, I'm glad you told the American public what's been on my mind for years. Just wish you hadn't waited quite so long to speak out loudly about it.

At least he finally did and he did it on the perfect night.

The only thing Bill Clinton said that I'm dubious about is he said, "Barack Obama is ready to defend the Constitution..."

Well, unless Barack reverses FISA - the law that chokes the shit out of the 4th Amendment - which he unexpectedly voted for in July, he's already not defended that.

Eh, that's the seedy side of politics. I cross my fingers that some Congressman or woman will write an amendment to undo part of this and President Obama will back it.

Overall and through the evening, Bill and Hillary looked totally relaxed and even happy.

Dare we believe that the Obama-Clinton feud is over? Time will tell.

Joe Biden was introduced by one of his two sons who is a Captain in the Delaware National Guard. This young man spoke of the car accident that took the life of his mother and baby sister when he was only four years old, and how his dad stayed at his hospital bedside and was sworn in there for another run in the Senate.

I'm a sucker for sentiment and had a tear in my eye. Michelle Obama is too. She had to wipe her tears away with tissue. She's so not fake, and where she may have blown it with some voters last night by looking so friggin' mad at Hillary, maybe she won some over tonight. Go girl!

Biden took a tad too long warming up
he began his speech; at least I got to continue writing as he was talking.

Joe finally got interesting by saying, "I haven't seen so many people knocked down with no one to help them get up... that's America George Bush has given us, and the kind McCain will give us..."

He pointed out Barack's accomplishments and plans, plans which are far different from his opponent. "Do you remember when the world used to trust us?... John McCain is my friend, but I profoundly disagree with John's idea of where he wants to take this country... That's not change, that's more of the same."

The audience liked that catchy phrase and began chanting it. LOL, maybe we can thank Dr. Seuss for laying that groundwork.

Tonight's icing on the cake was a surprise guest appearance by Barack! Oh yeah! Our man was looking good. He didn't say a whole lot, but didn't need to since he's speaking tomorrow.

Oh yeah! Wish I could be there!

  2. Oooo, ain't that the truth. Right now I just finished listening to fat-ass Pat Buchanan have a pissy-fit over the Hurricane Katrina comments, etc. Oh, the figurative elephants in the room are being exposed. It's gonna be an interesting fight from here!

  4. The beauty of blogging is that sometimes you just want to say something and share it with others, doesn't always need to be deep.

Great post! History was indeed made last nigh, I swear I felt the presence of long dead ancestors saying its about time.

I missed watching Bill though I did hear snippets this morning on NPR, everything I have read indicates BIll came correct, glad to hear that. Hopefully now folks can get back to focusing on the goal which is to win the White House.

  8. Did you notice how Joe Biden kept calling John McCain just "John." Nobody else does that. I wanted to write a post about that today, but put something else up. That level of familiarity, or easy equality is a huge benefit. Biden speaks to McCain from a position of equality because of their age, accomplishments, race and gender. I wonder if Obama or Hillary would ever get to that point, or if everyone would have accepted them using just McCain's first name like that.

I may have to write about this.

And Obama is cooler than cool. Ice Cold.

  9. Thanks Torrance and Sagacious.

Big Man, there are a lot of reasons to be concerned about Joe Biden. There's so much excitement up thru today over history being made, however, that I hesitate in raining on anyone's parade with the downside of the Obama-Biden team. I'll be writing an article about him too in the near future, and look forward to reading yours.

  10. "Biden speaks to McCain from a position of equality because of their age, accomplishments, race and gender."

Also, because they've been friends for 20+ years.
No big deal. Joe is friendly with everyone.

Let's focus on one thing and one thing only. . . getting the Obama-Biden ticket elected.
